In push hands; keep your structure. Don't let your arms cross the centre line.
Don't go back unless already turning.
If you just go backwards they will merely follow you.
Either deflect before their power reaches you or resist with equal power then deflect.

Mind guides body, body follows thoughts.
Quietness is the guide to movement
Stillness comes before motion

When posture is balanced the body is centred and stable. Be aware of the eight directions .
Forces within must be balanced, eg, pushing forward reqires an equal effort backwards.
Balanced Yi, Chi and posture is the secret
Any attack must only be made at the point of change only.
Never exert all your energy, conserve some for necessary changes.

An attack with a hand must first come through the other joints therefore act on these and the energy will not reach the attcking hand.
Muscles relax - bones grow long.
Before your foot touches the ground feel the air beneath it.
You might relax but you don't concede - you merely relax down into a connection between them and your own centre.
If they can't feel anything , they can't do anything.
Single whip is a wide bow step. Play lute and high pat on horse are narrow steps.
Collapsed ---- conscious, aware, controlled relaxation --- rigid.
Three places you can chose to feel. Only one is right !
General principle - shoulders over hips ( later they become one)
Wave hands like clouds - have light feet.

Tai Chi movement arises out of stillness, and returns to it.
Do not be in a rush . . . do not overwater the seedling !
The interplay of movement and stillness are crucial to your tai chi. . they are your tai chi.
Major energy pathways pass through your joints therefore any tension restricts this flow. . . relax all joints.
Whatevever you practice. . . in time, you become.
Operate from the heart-mind.
Never hold your breath.
Flowing like a river allow your ligaments to release and your muscles to stretch.
Legs always slightly bent.
Continuity essential. Use circular approach, internally and externally.

Five important considerations.
Spirals .. seek them out and exploit them
Externally co-ordinate the limbs through the centre
Internally co-ordinate intention, energy and consciousness.
Connect to the spine.
Open and close joints.
Be mindful of energy channels or meridians.
Learn to 'feel' each part of the body with your mind.
Keep hands at least one fist away from your body. (So as not to shortcircuit your energy field or aura)
As your heart rate increases muscles begin to stiffen, vision narrows and fine motor controls diminish. Hence the great importance of staying calm and stilling the mind.
"A mind of 'no expectation' is required in a dangerous situation."

Empty force has limitations against an attcker but is good for healing. It means you are sensitised to the chi flow within you and in others.
Your mind needs to tangibly move through and in your body.
Seek to improve your mind flow.
The chi flows and tells the body to act.

Let consciousness be the guide for all body movement.
Concentrate and engage with the imagination.
Important to do it right, not quickly.
Extremities are extended to the infinite.
Keep mind open, do not be imprisoned by your own thoughts.
Keep control of your own destiny
Tai Chi is not just about moves, but about beliefs

Breathing is a continuum,
like dusk is the junction of night and day, day and night.
Seek and show mindfully all internal spirals.
Seek sensitivity . . . not power and control.
Yi first – body follows
Ba men changes everything
Knowing the words is only a beginning.
Energy centre can be outside of you.
All is only one move, never one, two!
Initiate movement from the inside.

Changes in the natural world are infinite
The tai chi symbol is a guide to their understanding.
Through tai chi relaxation you open up the endocrine and nervous systems and therefore it becomes an internal development.
Be warned ... our sequence of using energy is often flawed and freezes muscles.
Know and understand your own body first.
Study the classics ... compare yourself to the classics.
Form or methods is not enough.
Translators always lose something of the natural essence.
If you follow the principles then energy will be expressed.
Energy moves before the hand
Move yourself, not them.
All practice should have the energy exchange. . .
not strength but energy.
Just like water, fast or slow does not come into the equation.
Techniques are like ocean waves. . . too numerous – become water and they are all yours.

No fixed part ... no broken part ... no beginning and no end ... no linear... between the yin and yang there is no boundary ... they are in harmony.
Natural changes are too complex for our minds.
A punch goes from a big body to a small point. . . this is not the way of tai chi which starts at a point and expands.
Therefore, deflect and grow. Use Yi.
Be the flower in the sunshine.
All joints open like a flower.
Think of your joints like balls floating in water.
Along each limb the energy should flow, bit by bit. If the whole limb is used then only strength is manifested. . . not the power you hope for in tai chi.
Use rounded exercises so that they carry to the form
Kua opening, aids rounding
Standing is an exercise. (Or can be when done correctly)

Avoid striking an opponent with the yang as contact. . . use yin side.
Always the same order of flow. . . hip knee foot, shoulder elbow hand.
All transforming moments come to your centre (like being in a shower)
Chi Kung . . . think of long fingers making a circle.
Change your mind pattern . . . Yi before physical ... work on it.
It is easy to be broken when all is in one direction.
Nature did not leave us . . . we left it !!
Tai Chi returns us to this harmony.
Bad habits take you away from nature and its harmony.
Rain falls and compresses... steam rises and expands. Nature is all directions.

The wave of energy through arms coincides with that of legs.
For neutralising, energy is inward not outward.
Use opposite arm and hip – means whole body is connected
(static white crane comes from using arms only – use Kua on opposites to make it move)
If you stop at any point then the enemy can adjust. Think back on the symbol . . . no beginning, no end.
Technique is one direction but energy is all directions.
Too much 'want' stops you.

Chin na ... 3 levels,
physical, nei jing, energy (water) be like water!

Be out of your mind !

go in your mind where that goes.

When striking. . . including own pressure points for chi kung, use your mind on the back of the hand or your palm contracts ... not what you want. (expansion!)
You can use hegu point in chi kung striking the back.
Feel like the body is an inflatable ball. . . maintains form.
An empty home and a full home have a different energy !

Don't stand on heels as the bone is hard on the earth and the energy is sent back into the body. Use the pressure point , yong chuan' (soft part of ball of foot) so that you can cushion the body.
Feet should feel like boats on the water.
The body should feel like a boat on the water too. When you want to turn make sure the boat is not in a trough but on the crest.

When standing on one leg have a sense that each time you are free to kick with the other.
Yi (intention, imagination, energy) is always out ... and out .... and out. Lengthen fingers, lengthen spine. Yi is ever out.
There are many dantiens (energy fields)
Never let their force meet yours.
Feel the moves occurring this will create more feeling.
Be water
Separate your skin from muscle from bone. . . yin and yang.
